David Harvey
David is a recognised speaker and commentator on family business issues. He is a former President of the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship and an industrial fellow at Kingston Business School. David is both a Chartered Accountant and a public affairs practitioner.
David Harvey is chief executive of STEP (the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners), the professional body for lawyers, accountants and other senior professionals who deal with the stewardship of assets to the generations.

Rupert Merson
Rupert specialises in helping ambitious owner-managed and family businesses with organisational development, governance, strategy development and people management problems. He has a particular interest in the organisational issues caused by growth.
Rupert is a partner in BDO Stoy Hayward. He is a Chartered Accountant and a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. He is a fellow of London Business School and publishes frequently in the national press on a broad range of business topics. He has published four books on the key roles in the growing business, and co-authored a fifth book on family business.

Kents Cavern celebrated 100 years of Powe family ownership in 2003. Since 2000, Nick Powe has been Managing Director of Kents Cavern Ltd in Torquay. Married with four children, Nick is the fifth generation of the same family to run Kents Cavern.
Prior to taking over the family business, Nick was financial controller for Nestle’s European petfood division. In Torbay, he is the chairman of the company that manages the work of the English Riviera Global Geopark and is a board member of the Torbay Development Agency, a public/private sector company that overseas the economic regeneration of Torbay. Nick will share his insights into the strategy ensuring Kents Cavern’s success through the generations.

Alastair Sawday

Before publishing, Alastair ran a pioneering travel company called Journeys, aimed at ‘leaving the faintest footprint’. He also ran walking and cycling tours all over Europe, ensuring that the money stayed in the local economy.

Sally will share her skills of assessing quality and her experience in adding real value to a dining experience.

Mike Atkinson, The AA
Mike Atkinson, AA Area Manager will explore how the AA rate quality in accommodation and restaurants under a set of common quality standards. Mike will illustrate how quality is graded in relation to star ratings from one to five. He will also look at how the AA Rosette awards reflect the standards of food quality.
